Power is Power
The Romans had two words for power.
Imperium — the legal right to give orders. The thing that comes with the title, the rank, the org chart position. You either have it or you don't, and it's transferred formally, like a key.
Auctoritas — the personal weight that makes people actually want to follow you. Harder to name. Can't be granted. Senators had it or they didn't, and everyone in Rome knew the difference.
What's strange is that we merged these into one word. We call it all "power" or "authority" or "leadership" — and then we act surprised when promoting someone breaks the team.
Here's what happens: someone gets the imperium. The promotion, the title, the headcount. And the organization waits for the auctoritas to appear alongside it. It doesn't. It never did. The two were always separate mechanisms.
I've watched this fail consistently. Smart people elevated into management, now confused why nobody listens even though they're technically in charge. So they lean harder on the imperium — the org chart, the performance review, the approval process. Which is exactly the behavior that destroys the auctoritas they were hoping to build.
The inverse works better. People who accumulate personal authority before they have formal authority tend to hold it longer and use it less visibly. They don't need to remind you who's in charge.
Rome kept score on both. Separately. A senator could have enormous auctoritas with zero formal imperium, and everyone deferred to him anyway. A consul could have all the legal power and no one wanted to be in the room with him.
We collapsed those two categories. And now we wonder why most companies function on obedience instead of commitment.
And there is worse at the horizon.
AI is absorbing all the imperium there is to produce.
Every task that used to signal competence — the memo, the analysis, the code, the deck — can now be delegated to a model. The output exists. The authority that came attached to producing it is gone.
What's left is the only thing that was never in the output anyway. The judgment behind the ask. The track record of being trusted. The room that goes quiet when you speak. That's auctoritas — and it was always the real thing. We just didn't notice because imperium was keeping everyone busy.
The people who built their careers on production are about to discover they were accumulating the wrong kind of capital.
